From Zero to Hero

The word Baccara means zero in Italian, and is a clever double word play when considering the basic rules of the game, as well as the fact that when playing, neither the dealer nor the player actually receive any cards of their own!

This also dictates the nature of the bets that are played when playing Baccarat: a bet is placed on the Banker, the Player, or the probability of a tie. A tie is a volatile bet as it is the most unlikely of the three to actually occur.

Betting on the Banker or on the Player will result in even bets in the event of a winning bet. What this means is that a winning bet will result in the player’s money being multiplied by two. A tie is usually rewarded at an 8:1 ratio, being the high-risk bet that it is.

When playing, the Player will be dealt 2 cards. It’s important to keep in mind that the Player hand is merely a name, and that you (the player) do not actually have any control over what happens to the hand.

The idea is for the total of the 2 cards to tally up to as close to a total of 9 as possible. The values that are assigned are simple: cards numbered from 2 to 9 are all assumed at the exact value of the card. Aces total to one point and all ten cards amount to zero.

If the 2 cards added together exceed 10, the first digit is dropped. For example, 19 will become 9. Should the total exceed 5 – in other words 6 or over – the player will be required to stand and will not be permitted to request the drawing of another card. If, however, the draw totals to 5 or less than 5, another card must be drawn.
